The West Papua Provincial Government hopes that the construction of a new airport in Teluk Wondama Regency can begin in 2020.
Head of West Papua Transportation Agency, Agustinus Kadakolo in Manokwari on Monday said the location of the construction site had been carried out by the local government. Currently it is entered at the stage of land acquisition.
“The point is to determine the location. If the location is done, it means that development can be carried out,” he said.
Agustinus hopes that the land acquisition phase will be completed soon, then the Wondama Regency Government submits all land documents to the Ministry of Transportation.
According to him, the central government was quite ready to carry out the construction of the new airport. Even in 2020, the budget can be disbursed, provided the regions submit the required documents.
“Documents for the release of customary land and land certificates. If they already exist, they must be submitted immediately. This is what will later become one of the conditions for the disbursement of the central government budget,” he said again.
He expressed the need for flights from and to Teluk Wondama Regency to continue to increase as regional governments plan to develop the tourism sector. Wasior Airport, which is currently operating, is considered unable to be developed because it is in the middle of a community settlement.
“Wasior Airport can only accommodate pioneers of small aircraft such as Susi Air. If the tourism sector has developed, the flight volume will certainly increase, it needs to be prepared as soon as possible,” he said.
Kadalkolo said that the central government gave serious attention to the construction of airports in the area, even the development plan had been accommodated in the National Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMN) for 2020-2024.
He also invited the public to support the government program so that the area would soon develop, both through tourism potential and other sectors.
“Teluk Wondama is in the Cenderawasih National Park area. The tourism potential is very large, there are even a number of spots that are visited by both domestic and foreign tourists,” he said.
The presence of a larger new airport is believed to be able to increase the number of tourist visits to the area.
“Hopefully in the future, we can integrate the Teluk Wondama flight routes with other regions that have already developed tourism, such as Raja Ampat and other areas outside West Papua,” he said.
