Road construction is one of the priority infrastructure agendas of the government of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK). Especially the construction of roads outside Java to encourage economic equality.
One of them is in the provinces of Papua and West Papua. Road construction in Papua is divided into three categories, namely the national road, the Trans Papua road and the parallel road to the Papua border.
Based on data from the Directorate General of Highways of the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) received by detikFinance, Friday (9/14/2018), the construction of national roads in Papua-West Papua Province from 2015 to 2018 has reached 1,982 km. The 1,982 km of roads that have been built consist of 791 km in 2015, 477 km in 2016, 345 km in 2017 and 369 km in 2018.
While for road maintenance during the 2015-2018 period is targeted to reach 14,367 km. The 14,367 km of road length consists of 2,933 km in 2015, 3,625 km in 2016, 3,969 km in 2017 and 3,840 km in 2018.
The acceleration of infrastructure development in Papua is based on Presidential Instruction Number 5 of 2007 concerning the acceleration of the development of the Provinces of Papua and West Papua. The Ministry of PUPR is tasked with building 11 strategic segments along 3,131.6 km (1,070.95 km in West Papua Province and 2,060.65 km in Papua Province).
The total national road construction in the provinces of Papua and West Papua from 2005 to 2014 was recorded at 4,040 km. While the total maintenance of national roads in the two provinces in the same period was 18,263 km.
